Israel is at war with Hamas, after a surprise attack from the Gaza strip killed hundreds. Germany's federal public prosecutor has launched an investigation into Hamas for suspected crimes against German citizens following the surprise attack on Israel by Hamas fighters over the weekend. The families of those kidnapped have appealed to the German government for help. Argentina's foreign minister Santiago Cafiero said on Monday that seven Argentinians were killed during the attacks in Israel and 15 more remain missing. Brazil's foreign ministry said that three dual Brazilian-Israeli nationals were missing after attending the music festival, and the Chilean foreign ministry confirmed on Monday two of its nationals are missing. Mexico's Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena said on social media that two Mexicans, a man and a woman, had been taken hostage, without giving further details. Ten Nepalese citizens were killed in Kibbutz Alumim, one of the locations attacked by the Hamas fighters, and seven Filipinos are currently unaccounted for in Israel. Thailand's Labour Minister Phipakit has confirmed the deaths of at least 11 US citizens and two Ukrainian women who had been living in Israel for years.

Germany's federal public prosecutor has launched an investigation into Hamas - the Islamist movement that controls Gaza - for suspected crimes against German citizens, the Bild newspaper reported on Tuesday. The German foreign ministry confirmed on Monday that German citizens were among those kidnapped by Hamas in the attack, without giving precise numbers. The families of those kidnapped have appealed to the German government for help, Bild reported. The prosecutor is investigating Hamas on suspicion of murder, manslaughter and hostage-taking, the report said. The prosecutor's office was not immediately able to provide comment. Hamas launched an attack last week that saw fighters storming into Israeli towns, killing hundreds and abducting dozens of people. Hamas, which calls for Israel's destruction, says its attack was justified by the plight of Gaza under a 16-year-old blockade and the deadliest Israeli crackdown for years in the occupied West Bank.
