THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has launched the #PPAsyalTayo campaign to boost sea travel, revive passenger operations and spur the local economy during the "ber" months.

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago said this campaign seeks to reinvigorate sea travel by introducing new and improved seaports.

"When people envision ferry journeys, they often have a misconception of dirty, long travel; inadequate passenger terminal facilities; and hot and uncomfortable conditions. We want to dispel these negative perceptions of sea travel," Santiago said.

"Our ports today rival airports in terms of convenience, offering spacious, air-conditioned areas. You have the option to bring your vehicle onboard. There are a variety of dining choices and comfortable waiting areas. Traveling from port to port allows you to explore our tourist destinations because we are an archipelagic nation," he added.

The launch of the campaign follows the World Health Organization's declaration of the end of the global Covid-19 public health emergency. Travel enthusiasts and adventurers are now eager to make up for lost time, resulting in "revenge travel" trends. The Philippines is aligning with this global trend by easing travel restrictions and welcoming travelers back to land, air and sea routes.

In 2022, during the "ber" months, PPA recorded around 19.688 million passengers across its 25 Port Management Offices (PMO). The Port of Iloilo was the busiest, accommodating nearly 6 million passengers during that period, closely followed by the Ports of Batangas, Jordan (PMO Panay/Guimaras), Babak (PMO Davao), and Calapan (PMO Mindoro).

In 2022, passenger traffic at PPA ports surged to around 59.192 million, more than double the 2021 figure of 23.076 million. To accommodate this growth, PPA embarked on an ambitious plan to expand port facilities. With 13 projects already completed and 33 more underway, 19 are slated for completion by the end of 2023.

"It is expected that passenger traffic at ports will continually increase given the rebound of the economy and the tourism industry, as we move forward to the post-pandemic phase, and fortunately, we are prepared for this since even during the height of the pandemic. We pushed for the continuous construction and improvement of our facilities, which we inaugurated and opened to the public in the past months," Santiago said.

As part of its commitment to the campaign, PPA has also unveiled the #PPAsyalTayo music video, a captivating showcase of travel destinations accessible via sea ports. This in-house production, created without additional budget allocation, features the original song "Lakbay Pinas," composed and sung by the PPA Chorale.

The #PPAsyalTayo logo, also produced in-house, narrates the story of the diverse locations and ports accessible to travelers in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

The #PPAsyalTayo campaign is expected to attract more passengers to ports, playing a pivotal role in the local economy's resurgence from the pandemic's impact.
