GLOBAL construction materials company Cemex Philippines (CHP) has achieved a 50 percent reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated by its two cement subsidiaries Solid Cement Corp. and APO Cement Corp. from 1990 to 2022.

Based on public declarations, this is the highest CO2 emissions reduction in the industry, establishing Cemex's commitment to decarbonizing its operations through its Future in Action program.

Luis Franco, president and chief executive officer of CHP, said the milestone CO2 reduction was possible because of their team's high commitment to achieve net zero.

Franco also said they are on track to meet their ambition of less than 430 kilograms of net CO2 per ton of cement by 2030 and deliver net-zero CO2 concrete by 2050.

Santiago Ortiz, vice president for operations of CHP, said they are challenged but confident they can reach up to 67 percent reduction by 2030 as they continue to increase the use of alternative fuels and decarbonated raw materials and reduce their clinker factor.

Ortiz also said they will also focus more on using clean energy in their cement operations and pay more attention to water usage in the cement production process.

With close collaboration and commitment of all their teams, Atty. Christer Gaudiano, director for sustainability, risk management and public affairs of CHP, said they will meet the targets.
