TOURISM Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco has recognized the tourism potential of Cebu's Camotes Group of Islands.
During the Congressman Duke Frasco Friendship Ride and Run held Saturday in Santiago Bay in the town of San Francisco, the tourism chief highlighted the Camotes Group of Islands' potential as a sports and cruise tourism destination in her address.
Around 1,000 runners and cyclists joined the sporting event.
"Sports tourism has huge potential in our country because we have beautiful destinations in the Philippines where events can be held, including this long stretch of beach in San Francisco," Frasco said in Cebuano.
"Aside from this, we also have tourist attractions in the neighboring towns of Tudela, Poro and Pilar. So through sports tourism, we give our tourists, whether domestic or international, a chance to discover Camotes," she added.
Frasco stated that tourism development will be comparable to all areas under the Marcos Jr. administration and that the Department of Tourism (DoT) will expand its cruise tourism portfolio next year to include ports of call in Cebu.
There are around 22 tourist resorts that serve both local and foreign visitors, as well as several public and private beaches.
Tourist attractions in the Camotes include Buho Rock, Greenlake Park, Mount Calvary (Kalbaryo), Lake Danao, and the large mangrove swamp along the route from Pacijan (San Francisco) to Poro. There are several caves in the area, including Bukilat Cave, Timubo Cave and Guadalupe Cave, that feature a fresh-water subterranean lake.
Also, there are two waterfalls in the area: one in Poro and one in Tudela. Some of the resorts provide diving and snorkeling options.
Frasco commended the event's participants, emphasizing that their spending on the island benefits a wide range of tourist partners, including local hotels, businesses, suppliers, boatmen, transport operators and many others.
Other officials present during the local sports event gathering include Deputy Speaker Vincent Frasco; DoT Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao; Cebu Fifth District board member Mike Villamor; Mayors Alfred Arquillano (San Francisco), Gary Rama (Poro), Manuel Winky Santiago (Pilar), Greman Jojo Solante (Tudela), and Aljew Frasco (Liloan); Vice Mayor Richard Streegan of Sogod; and other local government officials.
